CIO: Systems of engagement require visibility and analytics

As we’ve all seen over the last several years, there’s been a dramatic re-allocation of budget and focus to move innovation from systems of record to systems of engagement. In its research report, “The Seismic Shift in Application Portfolios,” Forrester describes how companies using primarily less fluid software in systems of record now need to make those systems of record more fluid in order to interact responsively with customer-focused systems of engagement.

Our CEO Jyoti Bansal always states that every company is becoming a software company. This is primarily driven by systems of engagement as highlighted by ZDnet. The business requires more and more fluidity — hence, the push to agile development and agile release. But what does being fluid require? How can decisions be made more quickly and accurately?

Software and the users interacting with it create a lot of signal data. This means every customer, every interaction, every line of code executed creates data. This data indicates not only the efficiency of the software, but also how the software is used. Ultimately this equates to how the business is performing internally and externally.

But capturing this data can be a challenge. It can be captured by developers writing logging statements in the software or writing code to commit business data to data stores. This business data can be instrumented and extracted, as we do through the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform. Once this data is created, it should be analyzed from multiple perspectives:

  • To make decisions about where to shift the fluid business

  • To determine what software adjustments and experiments should be tried

  • To illuminate business KPIs, answering how is my business performing?

  • To illuminate technical KPIs, answering how is my application and infrastructure performing?

  • To identify good and bad things that are happening; security and business process monitoring are obvious use cases.
